A wee chat with the man himself-Steven Brown Art

A wee chat with the man himself

A wee chat with acclaimed artist Steven Brown

Steven Brown’s award winning contemporary art, has propelled him to becoming a household name in the UK, best known for his iconic McCoo paintings. Through Steven’s vivid imagination and his love of vibrant colours, it’s clear to see why his mantra is “Life feels better with colour”, which is expressed in all of his work. His colourful characters, landscapes and abstracts are much loved by collectors around the world, and his international appeal continues to grow at a rapid rate.

What’s the thing that you love most about being an Artist?

It’s great that so many people around the world love what I love - colour and animals. It’s the response from people to each new artwork that comes out that makes it so special - I try and interact with every person and comment.

What does your perfect Sunday look like?

Lazy as possible! I tend not to go out much these days, and enjoy spending time with my wife Caroline. I do a spot of painting on a Sunday too. It’s my fave day of the week.

Do you listen to anything when you’re painting?

Oh yes can’t paint without it! I love music passionately – I’ve a very mixed collection. I’m listening to a lot from the 50s - 70s at the mo. But I’m a huge fan of lots of different genres.

Where does your inspiration come from?

I love Art so I have a lot of artists I love, and they all tend to use ‘colour’ which really inspires me. During the summer time flowers are a huge inspiration.

What does an average ‘work day’ look like?

Late out of bed at 9-10ish, catch up on the news GMB, catch up on the phone, tidy up the house, then start on some painting. If it’s a dull day I tend not to paint as it just doesn’t help. So I’ll use that time to think about future projects. We always collect the grand kids from school, which is a highlight of my day because family means everything to me.

What has been your proudest moment so far?

So many.... But I think it has to be when opened the first store in Ayr. My throat was choked up and I wanted to cry with happiness. The opening night was absolutely brilliant, with friends and family there - just an incredible time I’ll never forget.

What do you cook when you want to impress?

I am very lazy when it comes to cooking but when I do, it’s Spaghetti Carbonara with a LOT of garlic.

What’s your worst habit?

Sarcasm - I’m terrible and my wife utterly hates it so I’m working on it....
